So you’ve bought yourself a Timpi Guardian Node Access NFT, but you’re not sure which is the best way to run your node. Below we take a quick look at the 3 main options available. There is no right or wrong way to do it – everyone has unique circumstances and skills, so we cover options for all situations + abilities.
Option 1 – Self-host at home
Arguably the best option – both in terms of overall cost and for the decentralisation of the network – is to host at home.
If you have the necessary bandwidth on your internet connection (full fibre for a Guardian) and have the technical skills to setup the hardware + software plus networking configuration, then hosting at home is probably best for you.
If that’s the case you can skip to ‘Timpi Guardian Node Setup Part 3 – Register Your Guardian Node’ [coming soon].
Option 2 – Host on a cloud VPS
If you do not have the resources at home or live in an area where power or internet outages are a real risk, then hosting with a cloud provider may be preferable.
With this you pay a monthly fee (or annual) and the hardware, OS, power, bandwidth, uptime are all provided as a service. It costs (in theory) a little more than self-hosting at home, but the cloud provider ensures reliability of the hardware + OS.
You will still need the technical skills to configure the OS (firewalls, ports, SSH etc) and install and run the Timpi software, as well as remote manage for any maintenance and troubleshooting.
We’ll cover how to buy + setup a VPS (with Contabo) in Part 2.
Option 3 – Use a Node as a Service provider
This is similar to a cloud provided, but instead of just providing a VM + OS for you to go in and setup + install Timpi software, the provider does ALL the management right up to, and including, the Timpi node software.
All you will need to do is get the IP address from the provider for your node, register your Guardian NFT against that IP and share your ‘Node ID’ back to the provider for their configuration. They will manage the rest and ensure your node stays up to date.
You will pay a premium for this – but you’ll need the least technical skills or resources if you choose this option.
Currently the following providers are offering Timpi Guardian nodes as a service:
What’s next?
Once you’ve chosen how you’re going to run your Timpi Guardian Node, you’ll need to get set up. In part 2 we’ll focus on the VPS option and explain how to buy and setup a cloud VPS with Contabo ready to run a Timpi Guardian Node.
Note: we do not hold any affiliate or marketing relationships with Contabo, Node Orbit or any other providers we feature in this blog.
